The company I work for is looking to increase production times when running cores. Their idea is to possibly purchase an Aicon Scanner to replace the CMM. Our CMM is a Cordax 1808 DCC MEA. My company had a couple people from Hexagon come out to show the Aicon Scanner and do a demonstration. The machine is really cool and all, but my only concern was when they were inspecting cores it seemed like a longer process to inspect than a CMM. So, Im just wondering if my company were to purchase this scanner and when I get the programs setup on it and go to run production cores is it really any faster than a cmm? Our cores size range from 1" to 3' in length. Honestly I think the best route is that the company I work for look into a shop floor CMM due to the extremely dusty environment, since we work with ceramics.
I would do the following:
1) Measure 5 parts at my company on the CMM, record the cycle time
2) Send 5 parts to the Hex-a-goons or have them come back with the machine and measure them on the scanner. Record the cycle time.
3) Compare the data and let the results drive your argument to your boss..put the ball in their court.
