Running CMM and programming (on different computers)

At my job we have 5 CMM's, 2 programmers/operators, and 1 guy that does manual measurements and very simple CMM parts (operator, not programmer). Of the 2 of us that program, I am the better and faster programmer (not ego speaking, just facts and what my boss relays to me). Because of that I am being given the bigger and most complex parts to program which pulls me away from the running parts for decent amounts of time. My boss brought me the idea of setting up an offline DMIS programming station next to the CMM that I primarily run so I can keep the CMM running while programming.
The question is, have any of you had experience programming and running two different parts at the same time (on different computers obviously) and how well did/does it work for you?

My concern is getting my mind into one part then having to switch gears to another part and back and forth and so on. I like the idea but I don't want to miss anything on either part because I was doing too much at one time.

Thoughts, opinions, is it Friday yet???

  • Sometimes. I know some people here who refuse to do extra work and nobody bothers to ask them anymore. Others who are always willing to help out are running around like crazy.

Not gonna lie! When I was a youngster I used to obsess with "the man is trying to hold me down!" or "the man is trying to overwork this brotha!" syndrome but then I had children of my own (or for those who don't "I got me some serious bills to pay!").

I work up to where my curiosity is at stable levels, and with enough caffeine it's friggin' fast, it pleases me and my boss usually only tells me "good morning" or "what uuup!" and my reviews are great (thus far!). No bad news is good news. I feel that if a boss asks, repeatedly, to do something there must be something wrong with you or it's probably time to get another job. If you can't find a job where you can't seem to please anyone try another role or industry until you "fit in". I enjoy what I do and I'll admit... it ain't everyday I get to experiment with theories or learn something new but I know once I get "caught up" I'll crack them out and have a boat load of fun again!

Today, on a Saturday, I get to upgrade our HMI for our automated cell! Little less than 3yrs ago, when I first started here, I didn't know what an HMI was hehe! The CMM workload is being spread elsewhere and I am doing more and more PLC programming and troubleshooting, Fanuc Robot programming, SQL database development and maintenance, HMI (snobby SOB huh?). I am still a CMM Operator/Programmer title wise but that's ok (it keeps me humble despite earlier 'poopy don't stink' remarks) I am learning for free and if I get good enough I'll ask for a title change (which equates to more $$$ for my soccer team of a family and maybe a miter saw I've been really wanting) If not then that knowledge and experience stays with me where ever (wherever?) I go, as in it's mine b_i_a_t_c_h_! With my old mentally... I wouldn't be in a Saturday, or if I was, I would be in the restroom watching "Home Improvement" or "Automotive" shows and cursed with desire.

Oh and I don't help anyone unless you're willing and you literally have a notepad and pencil in your hand. I see you pull out a cell phone and I'm done, keeps me from running around like a captain 'willing to help everyone', yes like a straight up CMM prima donna!
  • Its not exactly running and programming then. You would run other parts and program the "NEW" one ?
  • This doesn't work as well as advertised.

  • straight up CMM prima donna!
