Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?
  • That's awesome! I'm in WI by Madison and I know that Joliet and South Beloit area pretty well.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss! There are no words!
  • I wish we had a race up at Road America in Plymouth WI. I've been on that track before but never raced. The 1000s are hitting almost 200 MPH on the main straight!
  • We were planning on going to the MotoAmerica Superbike Races this coming weekend at Road America. Not sure if we will be able to now, something else came up.
  • my housemate actually has his MotoAmerica Pro License for the twins class. He raced Road America 2 or 3 years ago and I believe he got 4th on a Yamaha FZ-07. That was his first weekend ever on that track.
  • they should! Gambler500 is the fastest growing motorsport in the nation. Lemons is a bit more demanding... If they don't want to invest in the tech requirements (cage, suit, fuel cell, etc) for 24h Lemons, they should check out HooptieX, It's a rally-style gambler event, where you run what you have; as long as most structural OEM stuff is still intact on the car (pillars, windshield, hood, battery strap, windows etc).

  • My racing hobby is about to get a big boost. One of the vendors close to us is about to not be a tire supplier (vendors fault through VERY poor actions) and their region will be given to us. It should easily double our profits. We are currently looking at getting a second trailer and tire machine so, if we have conflicting events, we can cover both events.

This month has been ridiculously busy for me with the tire business, racing, changing jobs, and this weekend will be very tough on me because Sunday will be one year since I lost my wife. A lot of positives with one big negative.

Rooting for you champ, you got this dude! You're kicking A_S_S! The fact that they put your but_t to work and not fired you says a lot. Wishing you the best on the side business, it's hard to make money in the areas that you're most passionate about (like your hobby) but most of the few that do I am a little jelly of them and aspire to be like them.

Looks like I may be leaving the CMM world here in a few weeks, it's a tough call for me as that's been my bread and butter for many years BUT hey no risk no gain.

What are you moving onto, if I may ask?

I second . Inquiring minds want to know. Rolling eyes

  • Controls Engineer (like an actual engineer title... I know what you're thinking... who screwed up, right!). Will be making programs for machines that move like CMMs in a way but that parses G-Code instead. Been in school for 2 semesters now and decided to not wait until I had a degree to hunt for work so I whipped up a portfolio and managed to get the attention of the right folks (it wasn't easy work at all but fun nonetheless).
