Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?

  • sorry i had a few coffees today i'm in a ball busting mood RageSlight smile

  • As of today I am happy to share that I took a CMM programmer job at GM. I start in three weeks from now.

It was tough leaving the company I'm at now. They have been very respectful the whole time and it's a nice place to grow. I also struggle a little with being overly loyal and sentimental so that didn't make it any easier.

The one thing I'm slightly nervous about is the position is half PC-DMIS and half Calypso Astonished so I'll have to get up to speed on the Calypso portion

I felt the same as you when I left my last job a week and a half ago. What made it easier for me is the resentment I hold against them regarding events that happened just over a year ago and the time leading up to it. That resentment may be misplaced or not deserved entirely but that's how I felt and it made leaving easier.

Congrats on the new job! I hope your new job makes you as happy as mine does.
  • have fun with those strategy windows! lots of clicky clicky and pretty much ZERO keystrokes.

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy the new job.

I get what you mean about struggling with loyalty. I struggle with that too. But, you need to do what's best for you. I'm sure there is lots more room to grow at GM. And, now there will be an opening for someone else to have the opportunities you've had.

Also, have fun learning Calypso. I have always wanted to learn that myself, but haven't had the opportunity. I hope it comes easy to you.

Yeah depending on the place I can relate. My current job they have been pretty good to me. I have my frustrations (only 5 paid holidays this year and insurance isn't great) but they have impressed me with pay and them taking care of us when something comes up. They covered my time off when I had covid which was definitely helpful.
  • Thank you all, there is no way I would be able to have gotten where I'm at without the people on this forum helping me along the way. When I started using this site years ago, I feel I started to be a much more advanced programmer reading through all the different threads.

I'm hoping I can slowly dip my toes in the water with Calypso. I'll share my experiences with that on here for sure
