Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?

  • Not yet we can't get him to leave Wink

3 resumes submitted and I may have a temporary job working for my business partner (tire business). He owns a steel fab shop and he is the only one that works there. He broke his wrist this past weekend due to a mechanical failure on his bike. The front tire locked up at 140mph and he tumbled 1/4 mile down the track into the Armco barrier. Needless to say, doing steel work is going to be difficult so I may see if he wants some help for a bit until he is healed. We shall see.

His front tire locked up at 140mph and the worst part of the outcome is a broken wrist? That fella is made of some tough stuff!!

crashing at 140mph?! its astonishing that this person is still alive
  • Was he wearing one of those 'motorcycle air-bag' vests?
  • He tumbled for 1/4 mile before hitting the Armco barrier so he wasn't traveling that fast at that point but he still bounced 10' off the Armco. To his immense credit, he got himself up and over the Armco really quick. Rule is that if you are ok, you get your body off the track and over whatever barrier is there. He was dazed for quite a while and didn't really come to until he got to the hospital. He drove the RV with our big trailer home last night. You would be surprised at the gear we wear. It seems minimal but it does an exceptional job at protecting us from major injuries. That crash was crash #15 that his suit has seen.

no he wasn't. He hasn't had a wreck yet where the airbag would have helped so he doesn't wear one and neither do I. He does wear a spine protector which probably helped him. I don't wear a spine protector yet but I should probably invest in one during the offseason especially if I am able to get the bike I want which makes more power than his.
  • I am ready to leave my new job already. Hopefully I get a reply from one of the three places I sent a resume to earlier this week.

Anyone know how to get into offline contract programming or know a place hiring a programmer working remotely?

I was hoping someone would have responded to your question by now. I'm not looking for work right now, but I too have wondered about doing remote work. At the very least I thought it might be a nice way to help make ends meet while getting a small business off the ground... or something.

The forum is normally extra quite of Friday. Maybe someone will chime in Monday.

be careful y'all that's a serious conflict of interest, and an even more serious infringement on and non-compete agreements you have with your current employer.

My only conflict of interest is if I do work for another medical device company. Other than that, I'm free to work on the side as much as I want.

Apparently they don't care about that here. A few of the other guys that work here area actively working on starting their own company doing exactly what we do, 3d printing medical implants. They have a business model, name, structure and investors in place or lined up. Management here knows about this and have taken no action regarding it so I'm taking that as they don't care.

That being said, I would want to do remote programming as my full time job. I was hired as a CMM programmer but I'm being used as a slightly glorified inspector. This is not what was discussed/promised in my interview or in the conversations afterwards before starting work. Yes, despite the BS at my last job, I am regretting ever leaving there. I wish I had enough money saved up to quit and take a month or so off while I find another job. I did send my resume out to a few places about a week ago but haven't heard back yet and I am looking every day. I will probably contact some recruiters this week. I have a few LinkedIn connections that are recruiters for quality and manufacturing. If I can't find anything, I have been considering a complete career change.

Thus far, this has been the worst career decision of my life.
