Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?
  • The Intel plant that's at the South end of Phoenix/Chandler AZ is looking for a temp/contract (12 months minimum) Metrology Engineer with 15+ years of experience or bachelor's degree. Might be pretty lucrative. By the looks of their other postings, it seems like they are planning to exploit our experience, to train a minion with a degree, then dump you when said minion gets up to speed. They have an "Entry level" metrology engineer posting that requires bachelor's or master's degree and <3 months experience.

  • Update. The job I called about with the 4 day work week is now my employer! This place is great so far. Smaller shop (about 10 people total), job shop environment, everyone is really cool and relaxed and I am the quality department. I am taking over the AS9100 stuff, checking parts, writing programs and everything else quality related. Spoke with the owner today and he is really cool too. Wanting to expand the shop and take on more work.

As an added bonus... I don't have to deal with anymore!!! Sunglasses Just kidding bud. If we get busy enough here, I wouldn't mind getting you on working here.

Congratulations! Sounds like a nice gig.

I never know how to feel about working in small shops. I've worked in big and small shops. On on hand I like that in a small shop you can do things your own way and be the local CMM expert. It can also be nice to wear a couple hats and do different stuff from day to day. On the other hand it can be rough doing so much on your own. The work seems to come in waves and it can be hard to keep up sometimes. Scheduling vacation can be rough too.

If the people are all good there it should be more upside than downside. Especially if everyone is willing to help out at whatever needs doing. That can be a fun environment.
  • Also, I like what you currently have under the job function section of your user profile. I would say you can update that, but maybe not yet Stuck out tongue closed eyes
  • Your job sounds almost exactly like my place. (We are about 35 employees) but I have enjoyed (nearly) every day working here!

  • Every company has their issues. It depends on how much you are willing to compromise and work through and tolerate those issues. At this juncture, I am picking my battles and choosing to go somewhere different. I wasn't looking for employment elsewhere, but the opportunity arose and after I thought about it, I decided to take a leap.

Well, that didn't take long. Approximately 2 months in, I am going back to my former employer. Just not the right fit and there were issues in which I wasn't happy. Hindsight, I should of brought up the issues I saw earlier on. That's on me. Plus, my former employer decided to make managerial changes, which is one of the reasons I left to begin with. I was asked if I'd consider coming back due to the changes. So I called them back a couple weeks ago. The only reason I left was because I was pursued with the help of a former coworker friend of mine. I wasn't looking.

Glad for you! Most people can't go back, when they need to, due to positions getting filled or whatever other reason/s.

Fortunately for me, they haven't filled my position nor the other QE position. They are having a hard time filling the role, especially since we're automotive and IATF certified. I know when I go back in, there will be a backlog of items to address. From my understanding, they need me to step back into my previous role, however with the intention of hiring a person to groom into the programming role and I take on more of a QE role rather than splitting the duties of QE and programming that I was doing before.
  • So I'm back where I started. Left my job of 4 years for, what I thought was a better opportunity (what a joke that was) then I went to a small company which was great but the 1-1.5 hour drive one way was killing me. 2 weeks ago, my old job emailed me about being the quality manager. I spoke with them on the phone then came in to talk to them. I had a few small demands, which they easily agreed to, and I started back here today. It all came full circle but I feel like this is where I belong so I'm not disappointed at all.
