Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?

  • That's probably due to the competitive nature of the current job market. They have to have a one-up on the competition.

    They have succeeded with me.Sunglasses
  • I suspect I will be putting in my two weeks tomorrow or Friday so, since we are painfully slow, I have started cleaning up my area. There is a possibility that they will not have me work the two weeks and may let me go immediately so I have everything as ready as it can be to leave. I have no issue working the two weeks but, if they let me go immediately, they better still pay out my unused vacation time. Also, if they don't have me work the two weeks, I will probably move up my start date by a week and take a week off in between to get some rest... then go racing that following weekend.

In case you can't tell... I'm pretty excited about this.

IDK about where you live but in MA & CT its the law that they have to pay you out for unused vacation time. Def look into this, don't leave all that $$ on the table!

Our handbook says (not sure on the law) that if 2 weeks is given then 100% of unused vacation time is paid out, if 1 week is given then 50% is paid out and less than 1 week notice you get none paid out. I have no intention of leaving that money on the table as I have almost 50 hours unused vacation time. I will leave immediately if they ask me to AND they pay out the vacation but that is the only way I am working less than 2 weeks.

Could pay for a few races. I may have 14 races the next weekend I go to the track if I pay for the extra 5 races that I'm not already signed up for.Sunglasses

Here, we get all our vacation at the beginning of the year, but you technically earn it throughout the year, which is then prorated based on how many months you work the year. So if you have 12 days of vacation, you can use it all, but you really earn a day each month. So if you use 7 days of vacation and leave in June, you will have to pay back 1 day.

Usually they let you finish out your desired notice unless they hate you. Then I don't know how that would work out with vacation.
  • Congrats wish you the best!

One thing in the back of my head of any job prospect is if I'll be allowed to be on forums. I've been too scared to ask lol Alien
  • It is better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I always try to use the forum openly (my boss knows I get on here) but not constantly (it is not very often that he sees me using the forum).
