CMM Use In Manufacturing

Hey guys/gals I am wondering how you and your CMM are used. aside from CMM operator, what titles do you carry? many? Engineer? Programmer? Metrologist?

  • My title is "Quality Engineer/CMM Programmer". We use PC DMIS, Quindos, as well as M&M Gear Checker CMMs.

I Program 70% of the time. Rest of the time I have various QE responsibilities related to our Quality System. When people are sick/on vacation I'll play CMM Operator for the day.
  • Currently I'm listed as a Quality Engineer but, I prefer Metrology Engineer as a title. I feel like a firefighter mostly... I sit around until there is a fire. I fill my time with process improvement projects in-between programming and print reviews.

  • Quality Automation and Systems Integration Engineer. 2 Plants, same town. I have (3) 4.5.4 SF and (2) Tigos, Probably going to buy 2 more Tigos in the next couple of months. They are used in manufacturing cells. Start with a forging, goes to a CNC lathe, then mill, then deburred, then to the CMM for inspection, then to an assembly area, assembled, then gets placed in a pressure test stand, if passes pressure test, goes on a paint cart, if fails, they troubleshoot. All by 1 person in the cell, the machinist. No CMM operators here. Each CMM inspects the same part over and over with almost no variation. Machinists place the part in a fixture, hit execute, scan the barcode and review the report. Works very well here. High volume, very low mix.

At my other plant, I have a 7.10.7 and an Optiv 321 Tp that runs a low volume high mix and my coworker (same title). No manufacturing cells, traditional manufacturing plant layout. Idea is that the 7.10.7 can replace much of physical QC work but its hard setting up a machine like that with no operator. Lots and lots of training.
  • Where I am now, I am a quality technician. My prior job liked to "restructure" everything every time the V.P. of the company read a new trendy management article. I was a quality tech, CMM programmer, quality lab tech, quality technical supervisor, gage/calibration tech, and a few more I cannot remember.

My current place had no quality department prior to a year ago. It was 1 guy with a manual CMM doing it all. I was brought in to get the 2 CMMs they bought up and running and write programs and help with CNC setups. I spend the majority of time in the lab doing setup checks for parts. It also doesn't help that none of the parts have CAD models, some only have old hand drawn prints entirely in fractions.
  • Currently title - Quality Technician / CMM Lead
Past titles - Metrologist, CMM Operator, Laser Tracker Programmer, Source Inspector
  • Current Title: Quality Engineer. My job is split between programming and QE functions. I also play operator as well from time to time.
  • Current title is CMM Programmer NPI (New Product Initiative) for the medical industry making implants and surgical instruments and all I do is write new programs, update per ECNs and proof run them as needed
  • Current title is CMM programmer but there are many duties that fall to me. I am effectively in charge of the CMM department, the most knowledgeable with GD&T and tasked with training others when needs be. I have been doing more operating than anything else lately though. We are having some slight staffing issues so I am the only one at the CMM for the majority of the time. We should have a new employee soon so I can get back to programming and all my other duties.

good luck! we have people set up interviews all of the time and then never respond (so they can keep their unemployment going)
