That time of the year again....

Well, this past weekend was opening day of archery season for deer in Michigan. Is anyone else on here a hunter?
  • This is probably my last year deer hunting. The farm I hunt at, is/was owned by the parents of my best friend. Pops passed 19 months ago or so, mom passed 5 months ago or so (don't expect me to remember when). So, the youngest son is the one who got "tasked" (stuck? screwed?) into staying home to help the old man run the farm (cattle, and cattle food crops). Several years ago (10?), he had to shut down his business (metal fab company) to do 'all' the stuff for the farm, and he never wanted to be a farmer. So, he is working on finishing all the projects his dad 'started' (John, build this, change this, do this kind of thing) then it goes up for sale. Then, no more deer hunting. I WILL NOT DEER HUNT on public land, too many whackjobs that shoot at anything that moves.

I've been pretty lucky, my parents live in an area of northern Michigan that is pretty sparsely populated. I hunt their property and the public land near by. I rarely ever see anyone out in the woods, unless it's a relative I am hunting with.

When he sells, you should find out if the new owners will let you hunt the property. I've known a few farmers that are glad to have someone hunt their property. It helps protect the crops.
  • Well, it wasn't just hunting. Nice 2-room shack back in the middle of the woods, 3-6 of us would stay there for several days to hunt, 3 of us have side-by-side or quads to get back there with all the gear, nice party.

  • Jefman, Is there any good hiking in your area? Do you have a favorite place that you like to frequent? (keep in mind I'm ignorant about the topography of France, so I apologize if it is a dumb question)

For me, I like to go to Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby IL. It's not too fancy, the US has much more interesting places to hike, but it is what I like most that is close to me. There isn't a lot of good hiking near Chicago.

I like "Pyrénées", mountains between France and Spain.
Highest point is only 3404 m, less than Alps (4808 m), but very interesting, and without lot of peoples !!!!!
Two sides, very different (green on french side - north, weather not always sunny and very "mineral" on the spanish side).
Last glaciers are disappearing, there are some bears which has been "imported", the last "local" bears" has been hunted. There is a kind of war between those who want to import bears and sheep farmers.
It was not really clever to kill local bears (they was herbivorous), but those which has been imported are carnivorous, you understand the problem with sheep ?
During a hike, I don't know what it is more dangerous, a bear or a alcoholic hunter Wink !

There are also Alps, in the east, the problem is the decreasing of permafrost, which gives a lot of enormous falling rocks, sometimes all the side of a summit, but I like also to go there, even if it's farther than Pyrénées. Glaciers are decreasing a lot (-120 m of thickness during a century at Chamonix).

There is also "Massif central", which are old vulcanic mountains, not to far from here...

    But I prefer Pyrénées !!!!!
  • That sounds awesome. I would definitely talk with the new owners and see if something could be worked out. I never hurts to ask. Maybe the new owners will join in and you'll make a new friend.
  • Not anymore! To many crazies in the woods anymore. A guy archery hunting in the Deloris area was killed by a guy hunting black powder. "saw something move and shot" He hit what he was shooting at but it just happened to be another hunter. The kids still hunt so still getting game meat from them. Good luck to all the people that still hunt, with getting your game and to come out alive!

The trick is to jump up and down and make a lot of noise so the other hunters will know you're human. Smiley

That is some pretty serious hiking! I bet it is quite beautiful there in the Pyrénées. Pictures online sure are nice.

I looked up the bears you are talking about. Yeah, it sure is controversial. People have very strong feelings both ways about them. I like the title of one article I found: "In the Pyrenees Mountains, It’s Bears vs. Sheep vs. Humans." Well, if the bears are so busy eating sheep at least they won't have much of an apatite for hikers Stuck out tongue closed eyes
