Say a fixture comes with 2 locators, an RFS locator and MMC locator.
Someone at my shop is telling me I need to do a GR&R on the MMC stab pin, but I feel like it's a waste of time. Our process is to use the RFS pins for fixture checks on the floor.
Does your company require a GR&R Study for both the RFS and MMC Stab pins? Seems a little silly to me.
it IS a waste of time to do an R&R using an MMC pin as those DO NOT 'locate' the part on the fixture, those are to allow the OPERATOR to change the location of the part to try to balance the entire part into tolerance.
Basically, they want to know if the fixture is repeatable using an MMC Pin. To me it's a waste of time and I told them it's a little redundant as our process calls for the inspectors to use the RFS locator. I don't think I've ever used an MMC Pin to do a GR&R but just wanted to clarify before approaching them about it.
This was my understanding, thanks for clarifying Matthew. I ended up doing the study anyways to show them that it's a waste of time. Our range went from .02mm to .2mm
if they insisted on something like that to me, I would have intentionally done everything I could to make it fail. pull to the front on both pins for one part, push to the rear for another, pull one end, push the other for the next, and push/pull for the next, etc.
