ASME Y14.45-2021 Measurement Data Reporting

Hi All,

I am pleased to announce that the ASME Y14.45 standard for Measurement Data Reporting has finally been published! As a founding member and vice-chair of the development subcommittee, this is a very proud moment.

The primary objective of Y14.45 is to provide standardized definitions and formats for reporting GD&T measurement data. This makes it extremely relevant to CMM inspection and I'm optimistic that Y14.45 will become a must-have document for CMM professionals. I expect that the standard will reinforce a lot of what you know already, and provide guidance on some more complex issues that have historically been left open to interpretation. We made a real effort to address difficult topics such as profile reporting, MMC and bonus tolerance, surface interpretation, patterns, composite FCF's, and optimization.

I also expect that Y14.45 will be a great aid for understanding the GD&T functionality in PC-DMIS. I know from committee colleagues that Hexagon has invested a lot in making PC-DMIS follow the GD&T standards more closely.

Just as importantly, I believe that Y14.45 will be a great help (and eye-opener) for those not directly involved in dimensional metrology. It will help them to appreciate how difficult and complex GD&T gets when you need to to go beyond Pass/Fail and actually calculate numbers from the measurements!

Y14.45 is available now in PDF format, and the hard copy version is schedule for Jan 26. Here is a link for ordering:

I'm expecting that the Y14.45 standard will generate a lot of questions and comments and I'm looking forward to the dialogue. Feel free to fire away or contact me privately.

  • Oh this is awesome, and something that has been sorely needed (at least within my department when dealing with correlation difficulties/reporting ambiguities with the customer/our sister plants)! I'll have to take a look soon.
  • See fellow Inspectors, prime example of Engineers making mistakes, Evan here is one of the top minds of Engineers, and yet he couldn't even put this Topic in the correct Topic area. It's good that this information is given, but just like a bad callout on a print, it doesn't belong here. Rolling eyes

You know Danny boy. We both might be jumping the gun here, I don't own this book yet, maybe Evan here can justify his sales pitch with answering a couple questions about what we refer to as "The Bible"

I'll start with a couple of pretty easy questions.

Question#1 - I need to extract points from a scan in PC-DMIS, Does the new ASME book show examples or walk throughs, on how to accomplish this?

Question#2- I have several different parts that are very similar, but may have one or more features that cause them to be different, I would like to implement the use of CASE/END CASE. Can the ASME book provide examples or walk throughs to use this?

    Kirbster269,

Thank you for the honest feedback. I posted the Y14.45 bulletin in the PC-DMIS For CMM's forum because it appeared to be the right place. GD&T is a central issue for many PC-DMIS programmers, and there have been a lot of GD&T questions asked on this forum. Perhaps I'm not familiar enough with the PC-DMIS user forum - what is the correct topic area where I should have posted?

Since this doesn't necessarily involve the PC-DMIS software, this should go into the Off Topic section.

Don't get all soft on me Evan, your fair game just like everyone else on here. I can take it, but better at dishing it out Rolling eyes Yes we know GD&T is a key roll for this job and this software. I preach to everyone old and new, that before even attempting to start with this software, they should at minimum have at least taken one class of GD&T, but yeah this should have been in OFF-TOPIC because this particular spot would be for relating to mechanical and Software issues. Yes I know who you are, from the other site, or The Dark Side Stuck out tongue closed eyes. Don't worry Matt will be here shortly to defend you, He has a man crush on you.Sunglasses
  • Non-registered forum users would not be able to access the off topic section.

  • How much are you compensated per post correctly diverted to its proper destination? And how do I enroll? I love that I knew it was only a matter of time.

    However Evan,

Thanks for the information. I'm eager to check it out. It wouldn't happen to cover symmetry at all would it? lol
  • They don't pay me sh_it. I'm old and cranky, that's what I'm supposed to do. Rolling eyes
