Getting a Star probe square to your machine

First, you need to have your star square to the machine.
What I do is place a 123 block on my plate.
I have a Rayco plate so it is easy to get that square.
When I put the star in I eyeball it square to the block.
Your dual calsphere needs to be pretty square to the machine also.
Next, I calibrate each tip individually, starting with #1.
It might take a few tries, but it'll work.

The one from B&S. No problems. It took some work, but I got it with help from Ken Amason.

John please put together a step-by-step document with pictures taken at various angles. A spreadsheet with a flow chart diagram will need to be made as well. Don't forget the cover sheet.

Can't get any pics right now. CMM is set up for something else. Sorry, no flow chart. Sphere is at a 45 degree angle. I calibrate on the top sphere which points into Y-axis.

1) Place 2 "1-2-3" blocks on the table. Get those square to the table. I use a Rayco fixture so this is pretty easy.

2) Move head so that one tip of the star is between the "1-2-3" blocks. Make the gap in the 123 blocks as small as possible.

3) Move head so that the 2tips perp to your first tip are parallel to the 123 block.

4) Tighten star in that position.

5) Calibrate the #1 tip. This is the tip pointing straight down.

6) Calibrate all tips. You may have some come up "out-of-tolerance". Recalibrate only these. You may need to repeat that calibration a few times as the tips may be slightly out.

7) once all the tips are in I run all tips again. It usually works after 2 runs.

I'll try to get a picture of the t-shirt I forgot to bring to NY. Has a "flow chart" for input/output.

Ken Amason is my predecessor. Even with his and John Kingston's help I was not able to get my star probe to calibrate all on one sphere. But with the help of James Mannes and the wonderful attached document I was able to get all tips to calibrate using both spheres. HTH

I know you guys read my post about the cover sheet. I don't see a cover sheet. There should be a cover sheet. You guys did read my post about a cover sheet right. I'll get that post to you guys on the cover sheet so that you'll have it..........
