Anyone use Discus and PC-DMIS?

Just trying Discus http://www.discussoftware.com/ to see if it will speed up our FAI process.

Just wondering if anyone is using it in anger and has any tips etc.

One thing I would like to know is how to generate pcdmis reports in .txt format.

I'm sure I know but am having a blonde moment and all is blank.
  • You are already doing everything that is required to facilitate automated results import into discus using their cmm results module. All you would have to do is change the report comments to the format that DISCUS needs (documented in the help file).

I really like your idea of using a different shaped ballot for manual checks! That's a fantastic idea.

Ballooning the screen shots of the MBD tolerances is a pretty cool idea as well. They have a 3D module for this - but I've no idea how well it works, or how many CAD packages are supported.

And I'm glad I could help out with the tolerancing issue Wink

I have seen the 3D version and at the time I reviewed it, it was not ready for prime time.
I also like to have the ability to put the balloons where I want.
And, another thing about doing it yourself and not letting it go completely automated is that errors and/or issues are often discovered during the ballooning process.
That is always the first thing I do when starting a new product and it has saved us many hours of wasted effort when I have found problems before we start building tooling and CNC programs.
There is just something about going over each and every item that will be included as part of the FAI that (for me anyway) helps with discovering issues.
  • Yes, we balloon drawings at the front end of the process as well - I agree with your assessment of the benefits.

You didn't mention anything about the automated import of results. We are finding this to be the biggest time saver in the process. Discus does a check of nominals / tolerances between CMM program and TDP as part of the import process and flags any mismatches. For instance, the diameter tolerance error would have been flagged during the import (unless the same error existed in the characteristic).

That does sound very valuable. I will look into it some more.
