I am wondering, if it's possible, to scan a part without a CAD File and extrapolate data and measurements from the scan and export that data into a CAD File. If this is possible, how do you do that?
PC-DMIS 2015 is reportedly much better than previous versions on 'Big COP', ie. multi-million-point scans. I haven't tried it myself, but our Laser/Vision department (OK, it's just one guy...) is impressed. There's also a lot of new alignments and operations on point-clouds.
