Windows 10 issues (Imagine that)

I recently loaded Windows 10 on my PC with V 2015.1. I am having a few issues. #1 - I cant save to my C Drive anymore and if I open an existing program on C drive, I get "serialization error " and " File Closed because of bad archive" that kills program. #2 - With Datapage RT ,get errors "cannot update file DPUPDATE.EXE" . #3- Tried saving PDF Files from Report. It keeps updating like it's working but doesn't actually save the file. Everything looks as if it would be an issue with administrative rights on my PC, but I have full Privileges. My IT guy tells me it's PC-Dmis issue not windows 10 issue. I am looking for any advice I can get before I call hexagon.
  • Mike B, I have learned a new thing. There is a fix from Microsoft regarding the inability to see server drive locations.

Just tried this with 2016.0 and it did not work. Since upgrading to Win10 I have not been able to access network resources when running PC-DMIS as administrator. Guess I will have to put in a support ticket.
  • Did you restart the computer after changing the registry?

I tested it with 2016.0 and it works.
  • Yup. Just to clarify, this is the entry that I created:
    EnableLinkedConnections

Not sure what else I could be doing wrong.
  • Should mention that I'm in a 64 bit environment. Don't know if that's relevant.

  • The problem with access to shared network folders is not a Win10 problem. You can have this with Win7 and up. The reason for this is from running PC-DMIS as an administrator and the 'administrator' account that you are using doesn't have access. When you choose to run as an administrator it runs as the local admin of your computer.

The best solution here is to not run PC-DMIS as an administrator. You should not be required to run any software with elevated permissions in general. If there is a valid reason why you cannot do this (using legacy Datapage for example) then you should complain and log a problem report with Hexagon so they will fix it.
  • Correct, the fix is originally from Windows Vista.

You do have to run the first login of PC-DMIS as admin, but probably not each subsequent. Although, the fix does work, so I don't know why Numbers is still having a problem.
  • Try this:

    Delete your current shortcut.

Go into the PC-DMIS folder, find the PCDLRN.exe and send the shortcut to desktop.

Right click, properties, Compatibility tab, Change Settings for all Users, check Run as Admin. Apply and close, and then try to open that new shortcut.
  • I never had this issue on Win 7. Win 10 seems to have tighter restrictions as far as permissions go, so I believe that the problem does have to do with the OS. I'm sure that it can be resolved though. I'll try recreating the shortcut as stated above. I have also submitted a ticket and will post the results in case others are having this issue. Every time that I have brought a problem to Hexagon tech, the first thing that they have asked is that I run as administrator. The ability to do so is definitely a necessity with this software.
  • Yeah, VinniUSMC is right about Vista. I forgot about this unloved child of Microsoft. My world went from XP to Win7 as it did with most other people.

The suggestion to run as an administrator is a simple and often an effective solution to shortcomings in the software or setup. This is why it is most often suggested. If you don't run PC-DMIS as an administrator you will see all the shared network drives and when you do you will not have access. This is clearly a permission problem. Suggesting to run as administrator is the *worst* solution and, depending on your situation, may not even be possible.

If you want to fix this you need to talk to your IT person. They can either change the local administrator account so it can access the shared network drives or, preferably, change the permissions on the files or registry settings that you need access to (which you currently cannot due to permissions set on these items).
  • Issues still going on here. Can't open or save programs inside C:Program Files and can't update Datapage in C:Program Data folders. But I can save Excel Documents in those drives. I would think if I couldn't save programs on that drive that I wouldn't be able to save anything on that drive.
