Measuring a circle in a teardrop shaped hole

Hi,

New guy here. I have a a cast aluminum block with a cored hole that I need to get correct diameter measurement on. The hole is in the shape of a teardrop. Looks exactly like a teardrop.

The hole is currently measured by inserting a gage pin into it. The current program takes 5 hits (least square) around the pin to get the diameter. All has been well until recently. The CMM operators have been forgetting to remove the gage pin afterwards. We've had a few instances where blocks with gage pins still in them have been moved downstream to the machining department and created havoc.

There are already comments in the program instructing operators to remove the pin but they're still forgetting to do it.

I have been tasked with getting a measurement on the hole without the gage pin in it. How would I go about doing that? The print calls out the diameter and doesnt take in effect the teardrop shape. Just a circle starting at the curved end of the teardrop.

If I take a few hits on the curved end of the teardrop, will pc dmis be able to figure the rest of the circle and give me a measurement? If not, what's the best way to do it. Should i use least square, maximum inscribed, etc? I do not have a CAD model.

Any help will be appreciated. I apologize in advance if I havent included enough detail or if I'm explaining the situation incorrectly. I'm very new at this. Thanks!
