PC-DMIS Software to Server connection unbearable. Please help.

Hello. I have a 7.10.7 SF electric machine running PC-DMIS 2020 R2. We all know the unfortunate notoriousness of software crashes. But, I am having too many issues and need help.

From my understanding, I have a virtual dongle and with that, every line of code or action I do with PC-DMIS communicates online to its server base. I have had my software crash several times just from saving as one example. There are also times when I try to re-open the software and when I open a project it says that the server is busy and I have to restart my computer to fix it. (I've checked my task manager and could not find anything to stop in order to avoid restarting the computer).

Should I try to receive a physical dongle like the older machines to avoid these issues? I never had this stuff happen until I started using the virtual dongle. I don't even know if I can do that to be honest.

Also, I haven't done my research thoroughly enough but I'm at the point where I feel I can't trust Exact Measurements versus Legacy anymore. Sometimes the differences in results can be over .001 (inches) and even greater. I know I've set up my datums properly for both ways to spit out the results. I also find it silly how in R1 you could get away with apparently a not properly constrained datum to give results that may be inaccurate and now 2020 R2 won't allow you to even create the feature if it's not constrained right with the datum scheme.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post! I appreciate it.

  • When you say "virtual dongle", what does that mean exactly? The options I know of is physical dongle (HASP) and the LMS (not HASP) licensing system (no dongle, either online licensing or offline licensing).

It seems you have two different PC-DMIS installations (judging by your screenshot). When switching between them, do you first start the version you want to use with "run as admin", close it and then launch the same version again "normally"? If not, try to do so to see if the "server busy" prompt disappears.

  • I always use the same version. PC-DMIS 2020 R2. It glitches out when it freezes in the middle of a program (not crashing, literally frozen application) and then when I try to relaunch after a minute, that error message appears. And the whole computer locking up and me having to hard restart has everything to do with the computer hardware that Hexagon supplies. It sucks. Don't have any other way to put it.

The non HASP licensing system is what is causing all of these issues. I have never had this happen when I had a HASP.
  • when he refers to Virtual Dongle, he's talking about the LMS. It makes PC-DMIS think that there's a dongle plugged in, when there isn't one
  • Thanks I got the LMS (offline) too.

Alvin, I assume your company has a good internet connection, scaled to the size of the amount of equipment that utilizes it. If not, it could be worth a try with the offline license version (your support should be able to help you with that). Also, next time it freezes, start task manager and see if the PC-DMIS process really crashed out (meaning the process is closed) otherwise, close the PC-DMIS process manually from the task manager. Before trying with the offline license option, doublecheck that the shortcut you use to start PC-DMIS with, is set to PCDLRN.EXE in the install folder. Default installation usually points the shortcut to "HexagonLauncher" which might cause problems. Or simply just doubleclick the PCDLRN.EXE in the installation folder to start PC-DMIS and see if starting it that way makes any difference for you.
  • I appreciate the recommendations. Thanks!
