Assigning a variable to get a height from a plane before the flip and after

Is this a legit way to dimension a height from a plane before the flip to a plane after the flip? It is a lathe only program for a part and I have it set up on a v-block which doesn't allow me to get hits on the plane its sitting on until I flip the part. I could make a fixture to elevate the part if needed. Just wondering if this way is accurate before I build a fixture.

  • Firstly, remove the '.' from use in naming conventions.
Can it be done, yes. Should it be done: depends on what you have for tolerance. If the tolerance is tight, you are better off to perform a direct location to location evaluation. If the tolerance is the +/-.005 as displayed, you will probably be ok to report the data in that manner.
Reality is, you should test your idea, and then overcheck with a mechanical setup, if both methods agree then go ahead and put the variable reference to use.

You really only need/want your variable entered into 1 axis field, but I don't see the extra locations hurting you unless you attempt a 3D distance.
