Small Probe diameter during calibration

Hi guys, due to the amount of vibration in the shop here we have to switch between analog and TTP. I have been using Analog up until today but then I switched over to TTP and I'm getting small probe diameters on calibration.

I am trying to calibrate a TP20 system and my probe diameter keeps measuring around 1.972 (2mm ball) I have adjusted the touch speed from 6mm/Sec all the way down to 2mm/Sec with no changes in probe diameter.

Do I need to go into the Probe force settings and start messing around ? and if I do this will it interfere with my Analog settings?

Thanks!

  • How many hits on the sphere do you take for each angle ? 9 ?
  • it doesn't matter how many. I've tested 5, 9, 17 and 29, and probably several others, all return the same value within +/-0.005mm. Remember, this is a mechanical unit. Same deal with various touch speed, from 0.5 to 6, same results, close enough to not matter. 37+ year old Validator and the 4 year old Global, all the same. There are 2 things you MUST look at for mechanical units, the StdDEV and the RANGE of the sizes. I see 0.001mm to 0.003mm StdDEV and a range of roughly 0.004mm for size, on both machines.

Looking at a result on the Global, MAX StdDEV of 0.003mm and 3.976 to 3.977 for 9 angles.

Looking at the Validator, MAX StdDEV of 0.003mm and 3.969 to 3.983 for 16 angles (keep in mind, the OEM specs for the Validator were +/-0.0007" or 0.017mm)

I'd say that is pretty darn good.
