Reverse Engineering Stuff

Guru's,

I am once again coming to you for aid;

I have yet to fully utilize the magical functions that lay dormant deep deep inside the menu bar and because of that I am hoping someone on here has journeyed far from the custom quickmeasure toolbar that I have grown accustomed to.

I have a mech engineer that wants to reverse engineer a CNC machine component on the CMM to make in-house, and in the past I have just taken a *** ton of manual points on the part, constructed some features and reported the XYZ actuals out for them to hand-key into CAD software... Nightmare for them.

I vaguely remember working with someone at Northrop that was able to export point data into a file format that could be uploaded into CAD software with the same aligned coordinate system to do the same thing, without the tedious entry of various nominals.

Is that what the "FILE -> EXPORT -> POINTCLOUD" function is for or is it another tool somewhere else?

Any help is always greatly appreciated.

At the moment programming on 2022.2 SP4.

  • Create a point cloud (COP) out of everything you have measured, choosing the correct alignment in the drop down menu. Export the point cloud COP as an XYZ file. Your engineers can then import it into their cad package, align it and create features from the data.

    Start by enabling the point cloud toolbar. Everything you need will be in that toolbar. HTH
