How to clean the CMM machine?

Morning all, hope everyone is good and everything is fine ...

Our plant has a Global S on the floor where dust is flying 24x7. I attached pictures for advise how to clear dust to maintain the machine . And how often should I try to clean ?

Thank you

  • The question "how often" will depend on your environment. That is something you will have to monitor and determine.

Those dust covers are removable. Each end is fixated by velcro. You can remove those covers momentarily while the machine is not running and use air to clean them up. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the granite where the air bearing glides along and along any moving track components like the Z and X axis'. Be careful of the glass scales to not scuff them up. You can lightly clean them with a clean room wipe and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Installing a portable white room over your machine would help reduce the amount of dust and debris that could cause issues down the road, and reduce the frequency of cleaning. I would ensure the granite bearing surfaces are kept as clean as possible. You can run the bearings over a "puddle" of alcohol to clean the bearings if they start clogging up from all the dust. The last company I was at had dust and ventilation problems so I know your pain.Rolling eyes
  • I had a CMM in a dirty shop that I was responsible for

They had to clean it twice a week (dust in the air) and get it re-hosed every other year (CMM was running off of a dirty air system that they refused to upgrade yet for some reason would spend ~$15k on the service call when the machine went down ConfusedConfused:confusedSlight smile
  • Yikes. I'd constantly be wiping the granite where the air bearings run. Cleaning the scales once per week and probably vacuuming the baffles(dust covers) once a month and then constantly be complaining that a high accuracy measuring machine should be subjected to those conditions and at least have some walls built around it, if not its own clean room. But having worked for and visited numerous companies, I understand that most of them are ignorant. Good luck.
