Profile of Surface to No Datums

Sorry, this is more of a print interpretation (ASME Y14.5) question than anything. Hope that's ok.

I have Profile of Surface .005 to no datums called out on a few features. Those features are allowed to shift (positionally) infinitely, correct?

Then, in the notes section I have UOS Profile of Surface .010 to ABC.

Are those features still allowed to shift infinitely? Or does the notes section control position of those features to .010? I guess my question is does the notes section also apply to features that are individually dimensioned.

  • Profile with no datum structure = FORM ONLY..you're just checking to make sure that an area of the part looks like whats on the model regardless of WHERE the geometry is physically positioned

    Above said....

You have two requirements you need to comply with.

    1) Those specified areas must look like the model within .005 profile unto itself (regardless of location)

    2) All other unspecified areas must be within .010 back to ABC (FORM AND LOCATION)
  • Thanks. So, in your opinion, the (.005) specified areas can be out of location by an inch and still be in spec?
