What probe module to use?

I'm using a Renishaw TTP and I typically use a 4mm ball x 30 or 50mm stylus. I have 3 TP20 modules, SF, MF, and EF. I check steel and aluminum parts. Does it matter which module I use? And should I use different modules for the 30mm and the 50mm? Any recommendations?

  • TP20 modules have a lifespan of approximately 200,000 hits.
--Lifespan is much shorter if they are crashed, especially over traveling in Z (compressing the module's internal components).
Definitely anticipate TP20 replacements often, and learn how to spot when they are nearing end of life (false hits, contacting part without detecting hits for example)

Another word of caution about TP20's:
There's standard order "Inhibit" modules which are susceptible to magnetic interference.
You can order NON-INHIBIT modules, which are not affected by magnetic interreference.
  • MCR20's "should" be connected to the machine, but you can absolutely use them without any connecting. The Inhibit and Non-Inhibit are physically identical in size and mount interface.
