M1 vs. M (Excel Form Report)

Hello. I am using ExcelFormReport and my print calls for some profiles to no datums (form only) and some profiles to datums (form and location). It seems like "M" is always the right option...M seems to match the results on my PDF file in both cases. Can anyone confirm? I saw another thread that saying M1 was for form and location and M was for form only. That does not seem to be the case for me.

Unless you have use ISO checked in the settings editor, M will be the sum of the max and min, and M1 will be the worst deviation between max and min. Either way, you should be reporting the MAX and MIN deviation in respects to ASME.

Case in point, let's say you have a 0.1 tolerance (+/-0.05). You have deviations of -0.055 and 0.025.

Your M measurement will be 0.08, which if reported against 0.1, would be within tolerance, right? The answer is no it's not in spec because the -0.055 goes beyond the 0.05 tolerance band. That is why you should report the Max and Min deviations.

If this were in ISO, it would take the -0.055 and multiply it by 2 and give you a measurement of 0.11, which against 0.1 would fail.

Reporting the Max and Min deviations will result in a non-conformance whether using ASME or ISO. That is why I like the updated ASME-2018 spec. ASME and ISO are now pretty much one in the same. So it eliminates the confusion.
  • Thanks. Complicated. I'm going to have to think more about this. For now it seems relatively safe to check what the PDF files says then choose whichever one matches the PDF.
