The Demon has been crashing on me a lot lately

I've come to expect the occasional Demon crash. But recently this bad boy is crashing an obscene amount more than usual. Typically happens after opening and closing about 3-4 programs during a session. Length of time between crashes doesn't matter; it can be rapid fire or several beats between each open/closing. The only thing I might have changed the past few weeks is opening the HOME page so I could take a gander at the sample programs on the HOME page. I can't for the life of me remember how to minimize that.

Otherwise I have no clue. In addition when the Demon wants to send a report I get a kicked back email telling me the email addy doesn't exist.

  • I use that same version and I am not seeing this.

Is it the same programs each day?

One could have an issue, and opening it triggers a crash on close or open of a future program. I don't have your programs, so that wouldn't apply to me (trying to step through troubleshooting).

I use the home screen thing to load recent programs, I only reboot the computer every 2-3 weeks, and I don't have that instability.

We don't have IDENTICAL windows installations, as we are using different computers, could be something there.

Could be PC hardware, thought that is unlikely, at a guess, or it should be dying to black/blue-screen-of-death.

Is there something you do a lot that I don't do, and it has a bug, that could be it. I do a lot of Profile (surface and line, pretty standard geometry, nothing exotic) and Position (GeoTol and Legacy). Other than that, just normal outputs. I do not loop on that machine. I just did a part with Concentricity for the first time, ever I think, nothing new. Do you have a group of programs that do Profile on complex surfaces with a specific scan type and you get the crash one or two program opens after one of them?

I'm trying to help you see if there is a pattern. Do you have a really basic program or two you can open, run a part, close, open the other, run a part, close, back to the first, and see if you generate a crash?
If you can bounce that, then it increases the odds there is something in a program that is tripping you up.

If you can isolate it to one program you run every day, there might be something in it (not something you did, but some corruption) that you might be able to fix reprogramming or restoring an older back-up.
  • ya for sure appreciate the response. I don't seem to see a pattern with any particular program or set of programs. It just happens about every 4-5 program openings. I unchecked the HOME page in F5 settings so I'm hoping that might be the issue.
  • that's where it is. Appreciate it.
  • We had major issues with the Homepage being enabled. Once disabled, we rarely see force closes.
  • 2020 R1, home page enabled, I give it about a 50% shot of crashing if I click one of the icons to load a program. It happens much less when I close a program.
  • The machines I have came new with 2021.2 installed. Neither has a home page issue.

Multiple reports, just in this thread, about potential issues.

Are you all on upgraded software from original purchase? I'm curious if upgrading to a version with the home screen from one that pre-dates it might have a hidden issue with Windows during the install that a clean install on a brand new system doesn't have...
  • We have also had crashes in 2021.2 when opening and closing programs. I noticed clearing out my "recent" list in the home page view helped reduce the crashes. Since the list goes on infinitely and does not cap out it seems. We have a lot of programs, so it had about 300 stored in memory. It does crash from time to time, but only if you open and close programs too quickly without giving it any time to breathe.

I clear out the recent programs list every week now to be safe.
  • How do you do that? I haven't seen a way to clear just those...

Never mind. Just played around and found it! Slight smile

In the settings editor you can change how many recent programs pc-dmis saves. In the "Option" cascade look for "MostRecentFileList" and you can change it to however many you would like.
