Star probe

I never used star probe before and I need help because I need to use it for one of the jobs.  I am attaching pictures showing what I have.  I believe this is very old star probe, side probes are fixed, can not be detached. I also found center probe for it. Based on what I found on the internet it is similar to attached picture of M2-2.0-30-Star but not exactly.  Few questions:

- do I need anything else or can I just attach extension to main probe and that's it?

- what do I select in PC-DMIS when building probe?  Attached are screenshots of what I am using and what selections I have available when building the probe. Is it 2BY18MMSTAR what I need to select or something else?

- I also don't see option for "side" probes.  Those are 2BY15MM but I don't see option like that

- How do I make sure those "side" probes are squared?  Is it just by "eyeballing"?

Once I know how to build this I can probably find info how to calibrate.  Thank you in advance.

  • yes definitely a TIPSTAR2BY30 in my opinion.

Remember TP2 Probe sensors are "5-way sensors" as in they cannot detect hits accurately in Z- (a hit that moves a star tip away from the sensor).

As  mentioned, squaring the probe to the machine is paramount.  I use a V-Block and a parallel bar.  I screw two posts into fixture grid on the granite, then push the parallel bar against the posts.  then i push the Vblock against the parallel. Firmly install the extension onto the probe, and loosely screw on the star.

Move probe so star edges are nearly hitting the v-block and then adjust/tighten/repeat until probe is TIGHT AS HE!!, and square to the v-block within about 1mm.
