Convert TP to profile?

Hello all

I have a call out for a cylinder TP in a certain length. Can I convert it to check the profile of the cylinder: PROFILE|d1m|A|B|C| SURFACE PROFILE CYL7?

Right now, I cut the cylinder with 2 planes ( Top and bottom of the hatched area), get 2 circles, and report the TP of both circles.

Thank you

  • Are you sure that it is the centerline of the cylinder that is being toleranced here?

Looking at the drawing, it sure looks like it is the start of the hatched area that is toleranced (the diameter sign should be removed from the tolerance though).

My first question is, why do you want to do that?

Profile would be a much more restrictive check because...

    1. You cannot include maximum material condition of the cylinder in the profile calculation.
    2. Profile would be checking form and location, whereas position would only look at the location.

The other important consideration is, can you actually access the hatched zone to take points on that section of the cylinder?  If you cannot, then profile is pointless anyway.

  •   Thank you for those questions. Yes, TP is more accurate in this situation and we should always follow the drawing in my understand ( The retiree brought in this in our programs, and I was questioned by PE those days).

How about my second question, What is the formulation of profile T ?
