i was measuring an oring groove that by calipers measured 0.645 the arm measured a plane to plane measurment of 0.234 i measured a plane at the top of the groove and a plane at the bottom of the groove and measured the distance between the two in 3d and that is number i got however all other dimensions i took using the same set up and alignment came out correct .
Are you sure that all of the hits were "GOOD"?
One way to trouble shoot this is to report out the location of both planes.
The difference between the 2 should equal the distance you are looking for.
Also, report out the flatness of each of those planes. That will help you see if you are getting bad hits.
And if you apply graphical and textual analysis to the flatness dimensions, that will also help out.
that is what i thought as well so redid this about 6 times and got the same number with in a couple thousandths each time and redid calibration and checked the arm using the bar and sphere and redid and got the same results the strange thing is that all the other measurments i took came out right.

You can dimension each plane separately.
If the distance you want is in the Z axis, just dimension each plane in Z.
Or you could just look at the "actual" Z values in the measured feature's listing.
Of course, if the planes are not normal to any axis, this will not work.

If you saved the program after the last part measured you can still check those plane locations.
Do you have to pick 3D then check the shortest distance box ? We had a similar problem and that seemed to have fixed it.
shortest distance only alters the distance algorithm for line-to-line measurements. it does nothing for plane-to-plane.
check out the Distance Dimension Help Menu for more info. it took me about 3 months to really get a handle on 1d vs 2d vs 3d dimensioning, your mileage may vary.
