Import points with cad model via igs

Hello, this is the first time I've tried something like this and I'm not sure if it's possible... I'm importing a cad model via IGS and one of the layers of the model contains some points given to me from the engineering dept, but when I open the program the layer of points is just blank. All the surfaces and lines etc show as normal, but the points don't seem to transfer... Is it not possible to import points with the surfaces?

I'm using pcDmis MR1 custom
  • I import points all the time, not a problem. Maybe they are on still a different layer? BUT, I would guess that they exported incorrectly and the points didn't come.
  • Hmm.. Well I've never had an issue importing to pcdmis thus far, and as far as I can see right now (though it is early on a fri) I'm not doing anything different. The rest of the model and its layers came in fine. I did try to create a new file with just the points and import that by itself, but it just came in as a blank file.
I'll try a couple more things. Any ideas are appreciated
  • PC-DMIS should be importing the IGES points. When you click the "Process" button a log of the entities read will be displayed in the lower half of the dialog. You should see the number of point types that were processed to be imported. If there are points processed then the points were imported. If all the points are in the Not Processed column then no points were imported. This could indicate a problem with either the IGES file format or the PC-DMIS IGES translator. If this is the case, please file a report with PC-DMIS support and include the IGES file if possible.

If all the points show up in the Processed Column then the problem could be with the point display options you have set. Open the Display Symbols dialog. Under Point Symbol set the type to CAD Point. Here you can set the size and display symbol for the CAD points. If it is set to Square or Round Dot then the size is in screen pixels. If it is 3 Lines of Sphere the size is in Part Program units. If the size is set too small the points will be too small to be displayed.
  • I know that there has been some improvements made in importing points since PC-DMIS v2011 MR1. If you attach your CAD model, I will test it with v2012 MR1 and see if the problem still exists.

  • Maybe they are on still a different layer?

Click View Setup, and ensure all layers are active.

Check your Display options under CAD Lighting, and make sure that Point entities have a viewable size (they may just be set too small?)

Maybe look under CAD Assembly to go a bit deeper, looking to activate that layer (F1 for more detail).

Or...they could have not imported. One of the above will work.
  • Are you using the CATIA v5 translator? If so, this sounds similar to a problem found in v2011 but fixed in the Tech Preview of v2012 MR1.

  • What I use to import points is a .XYZ file, once imported into PCDMIS just pick the point label and the demon takes its point name, nominal and vectors in the auto-circle menu....

This is a sample of the XYZ file:

    XYZIJK METRIC
    Measurement Point Report

    Part Number DP53-8H__-A_0F-01
    Part Name:
    Version:
    Revision:

    U794LBA0FB12 5542.00 -58.07 824.70 0.869 0.000 -0.496
    U794KBA0FB12 5542.00 39.43 824.70 0.869 0.000 -0.496
    R480BDX0F324 5551.50 299.83 872.00 0.886 0.134 -0.445

It is a simple text file (.XYZ extension) with point(s) label(s) x,y,z and i,j,k values for each point.
