PC DMIS new install issues

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum though I've been lurking for a little while, and I have a couple questions. I usually find answers searching through existing posts, but I've been unable to find what I need.

Here's a rundown of what I'm using for clarity; PC-DMIS 2014.1 SP6 running on a Dell Precision M4800 and a Leica AT402 laser tracker.

So recently I was having some serious stability issues with PC DMIS, crashing every 45 minutes or so out of the blue. I tried several fresh installs and different service packs as well as updating every driver i could find related to PC-DMIS but to no avail. My company's IT tech installed a new SSD hard drive to see if that was the issue but it got worse after that, crashing every 10-15 minutes, as well as when any toolbars or windows were clicked on.

It became more or less unusable at that point so upper management was floating around the idea of renewing licenses and SMA's which are ridiculously expensive, but then I took the computer from our Roamer arm (same Dell Precision M4800) and installed PC-DMIS to that and now it works flawlessly, haven't had one crash in the 4 hours I've been playing with it, crisis averted and happy management.

So I guess I have two questions,

what could have caused all those problems with the first PC?

The second is a little more mundane but still irritating. When I take a point with the laser and accept it (on the new PC), a point and a location measurement are created at the same time. In the last year that I've been using PC-Demon only a point was created. I really don't want the locations clogging up the edit command and neither does the shop foreman, so is there a setting or parameter change that I've missed? I've gone through File, Edit, View, Insert, Operation and Tracker about 5 times in case I missed something, as well as every single tool bar but can't get it to stop. As I said, mundane but still a nuisance.

And thanks to everyone that has posted so much valuable information here, it has been instrumental in teaching me how to find my way around this monster of a program.
