True Position of Circle on Cylinder at Compound Angle

In lieu of using 3D CAD data if XYZ and IJK values are provided can PC-DMIS measure a circle on a cylinder that is located on a compound angle? Can the distance from the measured circle center-point to nominal axis of the cylinder be reported? Can the true position of the circle center-point from the nominal axis of the cylinder be reported?

I have a strong background in GD&T, metrology, and gaging but I am not a CMM programmer and I am having extreme difficulty getting true position data from the straight sections of a tube that has several bends all on compound angles. Thank you in advance for your time, consideration, and any help or advise you can provide.

  • You can do true position on the cylinder (straight section of your tube) without creating a circle. Just make sure that the nominal data for the cylinder is XYZ, IJK, DIA, is all correct.

    If, for some reason, you want or need to get a circle from some station along that cylinder I would recommend;
    Measure the straight as a cylinder
    Program in a Generic Feature - Plane with the XYZ, and IJK of the nominal circle.
    Intersect the cyliinder and the generic plane to get the circle.
    Evaluate that for true position as needed.

  • Thank You for the quick response! Adding more information about my request to our supplier's portable CMM programmer who's measuring these parts--> still haven't received any results that make sense to me.
