Comparing CAD to pointcloud

I am working with a piece of material, and my job is to determine whether or not a certain piece can be made from this block of material by scanning the piece and aligning it to the cad. With this method, I can only look at the cloud to see if there are any pieces of the CAD sticking out. I'm wondering if there is a way to check (on PCDmis) if there are any parts that stick out. Additionally, I'm having trouble getting the alignment I am looking for using the Pointcloud/CAD alignment feature

  • Feels like PC-DMIS would be the wrong software to do this comparison in if you don't want to do the heavy lifting manually. Sounds like some sort of CAD/CAM software would be the best shot.

The bestfit alignment looks for similar surfaces between your block and your piece in order to fit them to each other. Here, it sounds like you'd want to see if the cloud fits in your block, regardless of alignment?
  • Yes that is what I'm trying to do. I definitely agree with your idea of using a different software. I am actually able to do it in PC Dmis but its been all manual and very time consuming... lol
