Datum reference frame error

Good afternoon. I have a part have a curved part with GD&T that is giving me a problem. I am sending 2 attachments. The 1st is a side view of the model so you can see the DATUM features and all GD&T call outs. The 2nd is from my part program where the model call out is visible, Xact Measure FCF dialog box is open, and the Xact Measure error message has popped up. It will not allow me to enter the tertiary (Datum C) datum into the FCF. My setup is as follows: 7 points across curved surface Datum A, single-point execution for both Datum B hole and Datum C hole (3 sample and one center hit). I use the "Iterate" alignment option. After execution of the alignment is complete, I "Constructed" a scanned surface with the 7 points on top and named it "SCN A". I then, under "Insert / Dimensions", I labeled the SCN A feature as Datum A, Cir B as Datum B, and Cir C as Datum C. I then dimensioned Dat B per model and Dat C per model. When I went dimension to the 3 holes in the center I ran into the error message. Does the curved primary datum (Datum A) not allow the tertiary datum to be used? I have not run into this problem with planar Datum A in the past. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks for the input. I was taught to "Iterate" alignments on parts with non-planar Datum A. I decided to use "Legacy" instead. I performed a "Iterate" alignment like always. I don't understand the dialogue box for "best fit" alignments because I wasn't trained to use that alignment, thus the "2 degrees of rotation" doesn't make any since to me. Hopefully I have a good enough report to keep the customer happy. Thanks again for the reply.
