I'm scanning something that has no CAD data, how do I export the scan so engineers can play with the pointcloud scan? These are oddball shapes, do I have to create an alignment (X, Y, Z) before I export?

It would be wise to align to some set of features to define a coordinate system for the pointcloud export. They may not need it, but you never know what might be helpful later.
There are a few ways to export a pointcloud, but I have always preferred the option on the Pointcloud toolbar, under the "Operator" option. Within there, you can set up some options for the export.
