Optical Gaging Systems (request tips & tricks on Smart Scope)

We use a Smart Scope to measure radii on some parts we manufacture. Since we use the video feature, it sometimes picks up shadows, debris, etc. and causes the parts to measure out of specification. Are there any tips or tricks you can share to improve the way we measure radii on optical gaging machines?

  • Are you using OGP software? We converted ours to PC-Dmis for similar reasons.
Some things to consider: Insure that you are using a minimal amount of lighting.
Try raising the sample part off of the glass surface.
Insure that the sample part is clean.
We converted to PC-Dmis because we could not get the repeatability we needed without multiple focus points. This would slow down the programs and was very inefficient.
Yes we have had issues with the PC-Dmis vision conversion, most notable, is the problems with calibration from Hexagon. On the positive side, Hexagon did do the right thing as far as our issues. Our system is up and running numerous automated programs with PC-Dmis.
