Component Placement - Vision

Hello,

My company is manufacturing large boards (7"x10") that get a form-in-place gasketing on them for RF shielding when assembled. The end customer is having issues with the placement of this and if the gasket overhangs the edge, they get short-circuiting during the testing process after assembly. The gasket line is incredibly complex over the entire part, so we are trying to find ways to expedite the process versus a manual visual inspection under magnification. My boss seems to think that there is some way to set up boundaries in a vision program that could flag a pass/fail, but I don't know what he is talking about.

I was able to approach the problem from two ways:
  1. Image Captures at various spots over the part to be reviewed under magnification. I added in a "serial number" user input so the files don't get jumbled when it dumps the image to a folder.
  2. I attempted measuring the parts using the CAD model from pickups on the part. Then I'd measure various areas to see if there was any shift past the edge. However, this can potentially throw false positives, as the parts are also plated and thickness of plating will trigger a fail if I just do +0 / -.002 or something.
Does anyone know about a boundaries function or something like that? Or any other methods I could take?
