GD&T training materials

Howdy!

Has anyone used any of the "instructor kits" for GD&T that are on the market?

If you have, which package/company/author and what did you like or dislike?

I have been tasked with preparing some "basic" GD&T courses that I will be teaching to my co-workers. The aim is to improve understanding without "getting too deep into it."

Almost like learning to swim without getting wet, I know.

Thanks in advance.
  • Gary Griffith has a couple of books out that oriented toward how to inspect to GD&T. They show common surface plate methods of inspection. Each chapter talks a little bit about each symbol and then gives an example or two of how to inspect it. The books run about $100 each as best as I can remember.
  • Wes:

Believe it or not... the old printed AVAIL manuals had some great pictorial definitions of how cmm software interprets GD&T... I have in the past, used some of them for training GD&T...
You should have some hanging around B&S in Rhode Island
  • while i haven't bought full the training package, i HAVE bought (with my own wampum)
Don Day's cool laminated wall chart, as well as The GD&T Hierarchy, Y14.5-2009 Textbook. Well illustrated, and explains GD&T basics pretty **** well for 90 bucks.
If Don threw in a free surface plate and indicator, it would be my pick for "Value of the Year". Sunglasses
and even 'cooler' he's listed right there on the ASME Y14 committee... sub-committee 5....
    Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
    great job, Tec-Ease! (applause)

  • If Don threw in a free surface plate and indicator.....

Methinks you've been keeping your head UNDER sealevel..... grin.
  • Any Luck?

    Hi Wes!

Can you share what (if any) conclusions you came up with? I've been tasked with basically the same deal, so any insight you've gleaned would be most appreciated.

Also, has anyone attended seminars with Dr Greg Hetland? He's heading downunder in a few months. I'll be attending - but I'm trying to figure out how much emphasis I should put on this for others. In short, is it a "must-see"?

    Howdy NZ CMM Girl,

Sadly I have made no real progress in terms of training materials that could be shared. I put down some of my own ideas about how the classes might go. I came up with rough drafts of an outline for the first couple of classes. However when I tried to follow up and further discuss this with the powers that originally suggested I make these preparations I was told this needs to be shelved for the time being. I continue to keep my eyes open and to think about it from time to time. If they were to come to me today and ask me to give a first class asap I could throw something together in a few hours making use of 2D sketches and drawings from the standard and a couple of other GD&T books I have on hand. Actual wooden or plastic models designed for teaching GD&T would be a great help, but I don't know that they are absolutely necessary.

All I know about Dr. Greg Hetland are the email newsletters I receive every month or so. I delete those after I read them, so I don't have a link or email address handy, but an internet search ought to get anyone interested in touch.

  • I've taken 2 GD&T classes from Dr. Hetland and would highly recommend his classes. We trained our design engineers, quality, and ME with our own prints/parts. It was very helpful.
  • Thanks for the info. We'll see how many of us management is prepared to send to the course. Most likely, I'll go and then present a cut down version of it to the others when I get back. Not ideal - but better than nothing!!
  • Hi,

I've pretty much self learnt all things GD&T (not much snr mgt support), well appart from a brief module during my apprenticeship 20 odd years ago.

I have found http://http://www.etinews.com/gdt_glossary.html pretty useful when explaining to my junior guys.

http://www.tec-ease.com/gdt-tips.php can also be good (Don Day site)

  • I just received the August enewsletter.
