A colleague asked me for a consult. His customer has a V13 and would like to finally upgrade to V14. But for safety reasons, they would like to have functioning V13 and V14 parallel during the test period to make sure everything works in V14.
When he asked me, I was not sitting in front of my PC. I was out. But I said: Sure, no problem. Let me just get back to the computer and I will reach out to discuss more.
So, I was walking outside. On my way to the office. Thinking. Thinking about how the hell can we do this? Do I have to separate the folders? Can I even have 2 different application versions next to each other? Oh jeez, this will be harder than I thought.
I walked into the office, aaaaand I called my boss. I needed to consult what is the best approach. And my boss was so confused by the question....
And I was confused about his confusion....
Luckily there are more intelligent people working for Q-DAS for a long time. So, they made a decision back in a day that upgrades should be easy. Long story short – parallel installation is done automatically during upgrade form V13 to V14.
And now the worst part – I already knew that. I made a lot of upgrades in my life. I always had parallel installation during test periods. I was just completely brain dead on that day....
Are there some lessons learned? Well for me there are 2:
- When you have such a day, take a break, or do something that does not require brain...
- When in doubt, read the documentation we prepared. It is all written there.
