I am analysing a cubic inhomogeneous representative volume element (RVE) using Marc-Mentat. How can I calculate the stress/strain volume averages of this RVE that is under certain boundary conditions (such as tension)? I need average stress and strain for computing elastic properties of this RVE.
The average stress and strain are calculated numerically by summing the multiplication of each stresses/strains at the integration points (Gauss points) with the volume of related integration points and dividing the summation by the total volume of elements.
Stress volume average is probably difficult to calculate. Average of all the integration point values may be close enough, which can be shown in Mentat by setting extrapolation method to average and turning nodal averaging off.
