What does "+ve" and "-ve" displacement mean in cohesive contact stress table?

I am trying to model cohesive contact between two different materials in Marc-Mentat and in Marc Volume A under "Cohesive Contact" title there is a paragraph which explains displacement table. In this paragraph an abbreviation is mentioned which is "+ve" and "-ve" displacement. What does "ve" mean? Does it mean value? I have added the piece of paragraph below.

I've seen those used to designate "positive" (+ve) and "negative" (-ve), though I find it a rather lazy way to abbreviate those terms. I guess they make sense if someone is writing on a board, though.
