Is there any way to apply a force to an area, not just to a point or vertex? I know one can use pressure to apply a force normal to a surface, but what about applying a force parallel to a surface?

Yes. In the Force tool, select the second icon "Apply Force/Moment at remote location", select Distribution Type = Compliant, Select Components/Resultant = Resultant, Insert Magnitude and the alpha, beta, gamma orientation angles. Unfortumately Apex Iberian Lynx does not support the orientation of the Force vector with the manipulator directly, hence you have to use an other tool to get the required orientation angles, e.g. " Create Coordinate System. There you can orient the coordinate system parallel to your surface and copy the dispayed orientation angles to the Create Force tool.
