I have an issue where applying either a total load or force on a model with frictional contacts causes large displacements at the first time step (2% of load) and it doesn't converge. It does work with an enforced displacement however.

Sorry for the delayed response. I just noticed that this went un answered. Depending on the problem setup normal force between the surfaces with friction may be necessary to stabilize the system and cause friction to resist the motion. I am not sure what your specific situation is but Friction alone can not be used to stabilize the system. Enforced displacement converges since it prevents rigidbody situation from occurring.
