License failure "Feature NASTRAN not recognized; attempting temporary MD licensing switch". What does that mean?

My MSC Nastran SOL101 job crashes because it is unable to find a license. I have my company IT working on it, but they're a little stumped. But, in particular, there's a line in the .log file that says:

Feature NASTRAN not recognized; attempting temporary MD licensing switch

This is right before the section it would usually report finding a license:
14:46:07 Feature NASTRAN not recognized; attempting temporary MD licensing switch.

There are times that I can get a license, and when successful, that line about MD Nastran does not appear. Would anyone know, does that particular line mean anything important? Or would it show up every time a license is unavailable? ...just looking for ways to help my IT troubleshoot my issue.

  • Hi Chris,

You can ignore that MD licensing switch message.
As Nastran was unable to get a license using the standard "NASTRAN" feature name the program is automatically checking to see if you have a license for "MD_NASTRAN". Some years ago MSC introduced a version that had extra functionality and was licensed as MD_NASTRAN, later this was all incorporated into the standard version and the MD version stopped. It is possible a user could have an old MD_NASTRAN license that is still valid and it allowed running either version, therefore Nastran still checks for the "MD" license FEATURE if it fails to get a standard one.

    best regards
