For Nastran SOL 400 how can I tell what KMETHOD I'm using when it is AUTO, is there anything in the output, f06, etc, or any debug output I can see it?

Are you using NLPARM? If the AUTO option is selected, the program automatically selects the most efficient strategy based on convergence rates. NLPARM is not as good as NLSTEP.
NLSTEP is the preferred option for SOL400. AUTO is only used for thermal analysis, PFNT and ITER should be used in mechanical analysis.
