Any fixture builder/checkers in here?

I mainly program for fixing fixtures we build. Just wondering how everyone else does their stuff.

Do you guys cut your details as assemblies or individual pieces? Which works better? We do individual details, but that seems to cause a lot of issues by the time the fixtures hit CMM.

When you guys program do you try to minimize tip changes or program block to block?

  • Jigs and Fixtures is a different world than any of the guys that are doing production. I honestly prefer it over production.

I've seen both ways. IF the jig/fixture is small enough to cut as an assembly that is definitely the way to go however, if your CNC department doesn't have machines large enough then there is no choice but to go with individual details. This is now called bolt hole construction.

As far as tips go, I use what I need no matter the number of changes. In Jigs ad fixtures you program once and run maybe a half dozen times so the number of probe changes isn't really a consideration. In production you program once and run 50,000 times so it does become an issue.

  • Good points. I couldn't imagine checking parts all day; every job being different is pretty cool.

We're growing pretty rapidly right now and we've taken on some pretty big cncs.... but doing a fascia or something would obviously be a pain.

Apparently copy and pasting rotation commands is too hard for our operators so they tend to complain... I don't think it should matter either.

I'm still very much in the learning stage, but conversations with other fixture checkers are few and far between online.
