Here's a load for you.....

4.8 tons on a Validator

  • It totally depends upon the CMM itself. The Validator is a BEAST and I wouldn't have any issue with that load on it as long as the table was properly supported. The install techs today can be sloppy about it and on a couple of occasions that I'm aware of, have only used three jack screws to level the table but didn't then raise the others up to the table hand tight for 6 point support. I would be a bit concerned if that were the case, but as I said, some CMMs are constructed with heavy loads in mind. Some I've run actually have a load limit sticker on them and to be honest most will hold more weight than you or I would guess. I'm rambling.

As long as the MAX table weight isn't exceeded and the table is properly supported, I would have no concerns whatsoever.

When they moved the Validator, I am the one who set up the support risers for it. 3 in front, 3 in back. Leveled it using 2 in front and 1 in back (using precision levels). I then tightened the other 3 cans (and I mean tight) to the point where they started to move the bubble. Once all were tight, I then checked the over-all level again and tweaked as needed. The die shoe was sitting on sheet metal that was ONLY over the riser cans, so all the weight was directly carried by the cans.
