How to justify a high-precision CMM?

We have 24 CMMs, (7.10.7 SF and Global Advantage 5.7.5 on the shop floor) and a Global performance 9.12.8 in the metrology lab. The volumetric performance varies from 5 to 9 μm among the 24 machines (Hexagon calibration ASME B89.4.1b-2001), the metrology lab's CMM last calibration performance was 6.7 μm, This range of variation in the volumetric performance causes that the correlations between machines is a little doubtful, especially when the difference in the results should not be greater than 5 micrometers. What other arguments could be used in addition to the previous one to justify the purchase of a new CMM of greater precision and accuracy than the rest of the machines and take or use it as kind of master / reference CMM?

  • There are a lot of factors to consider and only you and your coworkers can judge which are important enough to your business to merit any give cost.

However I have the slides from a power point presentation that was given at a co-ordinate metrology conference where a ROI analysis of whether or not to buy another CMM, and if so, which one. I have not read through them in detail in a couple of years, they may be tough to follow on their own, but the worksheets should prove somewhat useful.

I can not attach it here because it is 1,385 KB too large for the 200 KB limit. PM me and I will email the file to you.

Great presentation Wes, just in case if someone is interested in reading it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1N_idHlwSKeMXJsWUdNcjJpU0tyejMzRTE3R3YwRDdIUjVB/view?usp=drivesdk
