What to expect on calibration?

Hi all,

searched around but didn't find much. Hex is coming to calibrate our machines in the next months. I haven't been involved in this before. I started CMM programming a year ago. What to expect? Should i remove all my fixtures from the surface plate? Is there anything i should do before they come? How long does it usually take to calibrate a machine? How long if it needs adjustments?

All Day, and remove everything from the CMM, Probably best to just take the day off.

We just got our calibration done in April. Yes, remove surface plates, if you have a probe changer make sure to take that off as well. If you are the primary programmer, i would recommend planning to do some offline programming because you won't be touching your machine all day. Also, please remember the longer you sit and talk to the tech about random things, the longer it will take them to get the calibration done. I would agree with KIRBSTER269 if you dont have much to do, just take the day off.

Depending on the size of your machine and the tests you are having performed, it could range from a day to several days.

Oh wow.. I usually like to stay with whoever comes in and ask a million questions.. guess won't be doing that in this case. I am the only programmer-small company. Thank you all for your answers. I have 4 machines, so i guess it will take a few days

ThePudds take off the probe tree also?

What if i mark the plate with a sharpie so it's easier to put everything back when they're done? I have a few fixtures on each machine

No leave your probe changer and if you have one of those plates like Rayco or R&R leave them on there.

If you have a large surface plate on the granite, mark the corners before you remove it, especially if you have dedicated fixtures that go in a specific XY location. Otherwise you'll need to redo all your manual alignments. Those bolts have a lot of play in them.

KIRBSTER269 we have always taken our probe changer off. That's what my manager said anyways. It's not hard to re-calibrate the thing, so i don't mind. Doesn't take up a whole lot of time.
