Only sharing part of the print for nondisclosure purposes, but there was a lot wrong with it. Thought I would share this since it has been so annoying for me.
They put a position dimention on many of the faces when they clearly needed/wanted a surface profile.
They also had an M modifier on almost everything including: datums that are planes, flatness, and one distance dimension
Currently talking with my contact to see if we can get this straightened out.
It depends on what version of PC-DMIS you are using. In earlier versions, position of a plane only checked the plane center point, meaning you can have a skewed plane (out of position) while the center point is OK... In newer versions (don't know the breakpoint) position for a plane is reporting correctly and shall display the same result as if you were doing surface profile of the same plane, with the same datums. You can always try it, report both position and surface profile for your feature. They should match, if they don't, I'd go with the surface profile result (assuming ISO).
you can google it and unofficial copies can be downloaded in one click. Good luck when your company gets ratted out if you do this however. if you have an unlicensed copy used for commercial purposes, your company can get in BIIIIG trouble.
DAN_M our senior machine programmer, "decades of experience" and "has seen it all" didn't learn what profile meant until a couple weeks ago. Seriously. Once he learned, he decided cutting a .003 profile with two tools, and without cutting the datum at the same time was a bad idea. Yet I was the a$$hole because they started the production run and the program indicated they were out. "Can't be, CMM is wrong". Again. Ignored. Again.
I was on a 20 year old sub back a long time ago and have toured a couple WWII era boats.
Biggest thing I noted were how much larger the officer's areas were at the expense of the crew cabins (they're still a *little* larger than crew areas, not to the degree I saw)
hold your ground and respectfully prove your point
glad the part is useable while being out of tolerance, use this as a teaching moment on how to tolerance the print the correct way in the future so the cmm and the old guy both agree
