Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?

  • h3ll yeah! how'd you do ?

Meh... 14 races total, 1 win, a bunch of 3rd's, a 7th and a 10th. The 7th and 10th, I had suspension issues that were fixed after the second race. One race I lost brake pressure then it came back a few turns later but the damage to my results had been done (3rd). The last race on Saturday, on the last friggin lap in the last turn, I caught a rock in my radiator and lost all the coolant into the belly pan. I still finished 3rd but it made my Saturday evening very hectic trying to source parts at the track and get it fixed. The positive is that I lowered my personal best at that track by over 1.5 seconds! After the issues on Saturday, we both came out of the gate Sunday with a vengeance... but so did everybody else. Great racing though with some VERY close passes but we all had fun.
  • I'm very familiar with the Gambler. A few of my friends really want to do it. I want to do the 24 Hours Of Lemons (yes lemons, not LeMans).
